BLOG @#4

Poetry has been my first and most enduring outlet for personal and emotional expression. From third through fifth grade, I was part of a poetry group, the highlight being offered to perform at the Apollo Theater. Since then, poetry has remained in my life as a way to explore my thoughts, question myself, and understand who I am. Even now, I return to it to reflect, motivate, or simply speak my mind. On these blogs, I bring that same love for thought and creativity to fashion, using writing, images, and research to trace patterns in culture, identity, and self-expression that interest me.

I had only discovered Tumblr through Frank Ocean’s infamous coming-out poem. Reading it deeply resonated with me for a time its fragility and honesty was the only thing I could think of . Mirroring my own experiences and led me to explore everything he posted on there honestly speaking saved most of the stuff on there. From there, I dove into other musical artists’ Tumblrs, seeing how openly people shared their lives, their struggles, and their creativity. Tumblr had became a space for vulnerability, self-expression, and the discovery of fashion history, for where I could connect with patterns and aesthetics across cultures, including my own Taino heritage. Motivated by these communities, I began sharing my own poetry and reflections, blending a kind of  personal storytelling/project with it's own distinct visual and cultural language.
